Table of Contents
There are places in this world that many of us consider to be small pieces of Paradise. For some people, these places are pristine, light-sand beaches with lush palm trees near turquoise-blue water, where the mind and soul can fully recharge. This is the kind of destination we were thinking of when hubby and I decided to plan a Caribbean family beach vacation for Spring Break. After doing extensive research, we decided to book six days at an all-inclusive resort called Majestic Colonial Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic. This was a country I had wanted to visit for a very long time, so I was extremely excited!
When the day finally came and we arrived at the resort, we knew almost immediately that we were in for a treat. Over the six days we spent at Majestic Colonial, we discovered so many amazing things that truly made this place a top choice for a family beach vacation. This is without us even trying all the services and dining options the resort had to offer, and…YES…there were a lot!
Here are our favorite things about Majestic Colonial Punta Cana, and why you should consider putting it at the top of your list for your next family beach vacation!
Note: I have included only the amenities and activities we actually experienced. There are many other services offered at the resort that we did not use, and therefore can’t comment on!
The Beach

I don’t know about you, but when I am planning a beach vacation, one of the most important things for me is…well…the beach. Ideally, I would like crystal clear water, soft, light sand, and lots of palm trees nearby. The beach at Majestic Colonial Punta Cana definitely met all of these requirements. It was clean and truly picturesque, lined with a whole lot of palm trees, swaying gently in the breeze. It even had a lovely wedding gazebo for anyone looking to tie the knot in a Caribbean Paradise.

The time we spent on this beach was absolutely wonderful! Our two daughters, Angie and Dani, couldn’t get enough of swimming (more like splashing) in the water, and playing in the sand. They were exactly like kids in a candy store, except without the candy or the store!

Hubby and I also enjoyed swimming along with “tasting” a respectable number of drinks from the nearby beach bar. We were having such a good time that on our very first day, we forgot to reapply sunscreen, and got a little more “tanned” than we would have liked. It was a tan with a reddish hue, although in hubby’s case, it was more like a painful pink! Nevertheless, we enjoyed ourselves thoroughly, and will always cherish the memories from our visit to this incredible beach!

Here is a list of all the beach pros and one con (not really) for your consideration based on our personal experiences:
Pros
- Clean water, minimal amounts of seaweed, perfect temperature for swimming
- Light, soft sand, well-maintained by the resort staff
- Tall, lush palm trees lining the shore
- Plenty of available beach chairs, although if you want to sit closer to the front, you need to plan to go early as these chairs are the first ones to get snatched
- Beautiful wedding gazebo, in case you are planning a Caribbean wedding or just to take some more dreamy photos
- Plenty of daytime entertainment provided by resort staff
- Drinks and food at the Palapa in the back of the beach
- Different water sports, which we never tried since we were already having plenty of fun
Con
- Very occasional rocks in the water; If you happen to step on one of those while swimming, just move over a couple of feet, and you will be in the clear. These are far and few in between, and the water is so clear that, if you are paying attention, you can see where they are, and avoid them altogether.

The Swimming Pool
When I think of my ideal swimming pool, I always imagine one with isles of palm trees, and plenty of green tropical vegetation all around. The swimming pool at Majestic Colonial Punta Cana was all that, and so much more.

Let me just start by saying that it was enormous! How enormous exactly? According to the resort website, it is 400 meters (1312 feet) long, which makes it definitely the largest swimming pool I have ever seen. It basically follows the entire length of the resort, from the front lobby, all the way to the back of the beach. Its size aside, the swimming pool at Majestic Colonial was absolutely gorgeous, and so much fun to hang around.

Hubby and I really enjoyed spending the afternoons here while our daughters were playing in the resort kids club. We would sip on a few delicious cocktails at the swim-up (wet) bar, and then continue with a couple more drinks in the jacuzzi near the non-swim-up bar. The choice was not easy among two built-in jacuzzi areas and several bars nearby!

The celebration mood was always on at the pool! At one point, hubby and I got caught in a foam pool party, which made us feel like carefree college students gone wild during Spring Break! It was awesome, and quite entertaining to be among so many really happy, drunk people!

Honestly, as far as the Majestic Colonial Pool goes, I only have a list of pros, and no cons to give you. Here they are in no particular order:
Pros
- Beautifully maintained, enormous swimming pool
- Two built-in jacuzzi areas
- Several pool bars including a swim-up (wet) bar with endless choices of drinks and cocktails
- Pool entertainment, usually near the swim-up bar, but if not interested, you can always find a quiet spot since the pool is so large
Majestic Colonial Resort Grounds
When it comes to Majestic Colonial’s resort grounds, I can’t say enough…stunning gardens with flowers and lush palm trees, trimmed grass, clean walkways…So many people here work extremely hard to give you the impression that you are in fact in Paradise.

One of the most unbelievable things that we observed as far as ground keeping goes was the trimming of a really tall palm tree. The man who was assigned this task had to have been an acrobat or an athlete of some kind. We watched him in awe as he wrapped a short, thick rope around the trunk of the tree, and started making his way up, pushing with his bare feet, and advancing the rope higher and higher. When he finally reached the leaves, he clipped a few, and came down even faster. I couldn’t help but wonder: Are there many people that do this in the Dominican Republic? Does every resort have an acrobatic palm tree trimmer or is this the one guy they all call? Really, it was truly mind-blowing!
In any case, this just goes to show the extent to which the resort staff go to maintain everything looking beautiful and fresh. As you can imagine, I have no cons to list here, only more pros for the amazing Majestic Colonial resort grounds!
Pros
- Beautifully maintained gardens with flowers and lush palm trees
- Hard working staff who go to extremes to make sure everything is fresh and green
- A small shopping area located on the Caribbean street (on the side of the front lobby), where you can purchase some local souvenirs along with other basics. I personally loved the way the shops were painted!
- Spacious theater, and beautiful main lobby lined with fountains

Our Junior Suite Room
The room we booked at Majestic Colonial Punta Cana was not one of the fancy swim-up or ocean view suites. It was a Junior Suite with Jacuzzi, which didn’t even face the swimming pool. However, it was a spacious and very clean room with two double beds. It had a separate, enclosed shower area which was quite large, and jacuzzi on one side of the room. The staff also set up an extra twin bed for us, just in case we needed more sleeping space.

The Hair Dryer Enigma
We really had no concerns and complaints, except for one really weird problem. Somehow, our hair dryer didn’t work unless the front door was open. Go figure this one out! It had something to do with a sensor that was supposed to shut off the lights in the room when no one was inside. Instead, it shut off the electricity to several outlets when the door was closed. The resort staff worked hard to resolve the issue, but they couldn’t fix it by the end of our stay. The truth is, we really didn’t care! We are not the type of people that like to nitpick and complain. We just dried our hair with the room door open, and had fun with it, smiling and waving at random guests passing by!
Towels and a Bottle of Whiskey
I do need to mention that on one of the days, I believe it was Saturday, we didn’t get a new set of clean towels until about 6:00 pm. It was a big checkout/checkin day at the resort, and the staff were terribly busy. We completely understood the situation, and didn’t want to give anyone a hard time. In the end, we were pleasantly surprised when cleaning personnel showed up at our door. Not only did they bring us clean towels, but also a small bottle of whiskey to apologize for the delay!
So, to recap, here is my list of pros and cons based on our experiences with the Junior Suite at Majestic Colonial Punta Cana:
Pros
- Spacious room with two comfortable double beds, large independent shower area, and large tub with jacuzzi
- Balcony with patio furniture and nice views of either the pool or the garden; my understanding is, the side you get is randomly assigned
- Room maintained well and cleaned daily
Cons
- Hair dryer didn’t work unless the front door of the room was open (more of a hilarious fluke)
- On one of the days, our room was not cleaned until 6:00 pm. However, the staff kindly brought us a small bottle of whiskey to apologize for the delay
Splash Kids Club
Aaah, Splash Kids Club! This is truly where the Caribbean family vacation magic happens! It is the place where you drop off your kiddos so you can take a romantic stroll on the beach, or just a nap.

We definitely took advantage of this service, and all four of us, kids and parents, were very pleased. Hubby and I got to enjoy some time together. Meanwhile, our daughters were playing and having fun over at Splash Kids Club. In fact, they had so much fun that they didn’t want to leave, so every time they saw us coming to get them, they shouted: “Nooooo…FIVE more minutes!” Well, I could understand why!

There were three different areas with pools and water slides for kids of different ages. They were all themed in a really fun style. The staff were kind and caring, and provided plenty of fun activities for all the little visitors. They even organized events for some of the evenings where the kids got to perform for us. Our daughters, Angie and Dani, participated in a fashion show, and had a lot of fun with that.

Here is my list of nothing but pros for Splash Kids Club, as there were no cons to report:
Pros
- Three different splashing/swimming areas with water slides for kids of different ages, themed in a fun way
- Friendly, caring staff who watch the kids, and keep them safe and well-entertained
- Parents can drop off children between 4 and 14 years of age; kids under 4 need to be supervised by a parent or a guardian

Dining
As you can imagine, when you are in an all-inclusive resort, a large part of the deal is the food. At Majestic Colonial Punta Cana, there was a great variety of dining options, but honestly, we didn’t try most of them. We were so happy at the main buffet, that we really didn’t feel the urge to eat anywhere else. Another reason was that we were a little slow with making restaurant reservations, and these kinds of things need to be planned in advance. My advice is, visit the resort’s website, and read about all the different dining options they offer. Then, make your reservations as soon as you check into the resort! I did not try it, but I heard that the Oriental restaurant Ma+suri is a must. If you want to try the Teppanyaki there, you will have to make reservations in advance!
Supreme Main Buffet
The main buffet was indeed supreme, and we enjoyed eating there for most of our meals. There was a huge variety of food, and I won’t even attempt to list it all. However, I do want to mention a few of our favorite things that really made us excited to keep coming back.

- Salad bar with a really nice variety of fresh items
- Crepé counter, where you could order a crepé with your toppings of choice
- Fresh juice bar with pitchers of freshly-squeezed juice, which tasted heavenly
- Chocolate truffle counter, my personal favorite spot
Our kids had so much fun mixing and drinking different freshly-squeezed juices; they wanted to serve us some of their cocktails. Hubby and I had to “place our orders”, and then the kids happily brought us our mixture of choice.

Taino Restaurant
Taino Restaurant was the only dining option we tried other than the main buffet. It was a beautiful place that served Caribbean and Mexican specialties. The food was excellent, and I distinctly remember an absolutely delicious jerk chicken we had there. We didn’t need reservations for this restaurant, so we just walked in, and enjoyed a wonderful meal.

Excursion Options
I had decided that while in the Dominican Republic, I just had to see Santo Domingo, the capital city. I think the other members of the family would have been just as happy to not go anywhere, but I really wanted to drag them on an adventure. Luckily, Majestic Colonial made this very easy since they had representatives from various tour companies come every morning to the resort. We spoke with one of those representatives, and in no time were booked for a reasonably-priced, all-day excursion to Santo Domingo. It was a great tour, and we ended up having a wonderful time in a city, filled with so much fascinating history!

After our amazing six days at Majestic Colonial Punta Cana, we have decided we would definitely like to go back. There is still so much more to try and experience, in terms of food, and in terms of adventure.
Traveling to the Dominican Republic
If you decide to go for it, and book a trip to Majestic Colonial Punta Cana, here are a few tips regarding entering, and spending time in the Dominican Republic.
- Most tourists need to purchase a tourist card for 10 USD in order to enter the country. You can either arrange it in advance online, or get it at the airport after you land. Bring cash if you are planning on purchasing it at the airport,
and plan to pay 10 USD for each member in your group. There is only a short list of countries whose citizens are not required to purchase a tourist card for entry. Find more information under the additional resources below! - Bring lots of single-dollar bills, and keep them handy. There will be many helpful people to tip, from the moment you arrive until the moment you leave.
- Arrange transportation to Majestic Colonial Punta Cana either in advance online, or at the airport. We paid 40 USD for shuttle service from the airport to the resort. If you prefer to arrange this in advance, check out the resources below.

Entering the Dominican Republic and Transferring to the Resort
- Punta Cana International Airport – Here is the official website for Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ), where you can find information about transportation, immigration, duty free shopping, and the tourist card, which you will likely need to enter the Dominican Republic, unless you are a citizen of certain countries.
- Punta Cana (PUJ) Airport Shuttle – This is a really good site to reserve your transfer from the airport to Majestic Colonial Resort. There are other options as well, but this is one of the most reasonably-priced services I could find. You can either reserve your ride in advance, or take care of this once at the airport.
- U.S. Department of State – Bureau of Consular Affairs, Dominican Republic – Find out what the U.S. Department of State has to say about travel to the Dominican Republic. Don’t be too alarmed by warnings of crime, as these don’t apply so much to the resorts. Even in a city like Santo Domingo, use common sense, and you will be just fine!

You were totally right about this resort and if you plan on visiting the Majestic Resorts you will not be disappointed. One thing though about the dining is you can not pre- book your reservations before you get there. You can only book after you have been checked in. My advice would be to check the restaurants ahead of time and after you arrive then book them. The Japanese is a must and the Dominican/Mexican was very good.

You know when I first heard of the Dominican Republic? It was years ago on a talk show…it was an interview with one of the Victoria Secret models. She said that one of her most favorite beach shooting locations was the Dominican Republic. I figured, if a famous model who has been to all kinds of fabulous beaches loved the Dominican Republic, I would have to check it out! …And I did…and I can see why she loved it so much! It is gorgeous! Santo Domingo, the capital city, also has a lot to offer. Zona Colonial in Santo Domingo is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This is the land that Columbus first discovered! In Santo Domingo, you will find some of the oldest buildings in the New World…including the oldest cathedral! It is a fascinating place! 🙂
I am totally showing this post to the rest of my family. This looks like somewhere we need to go! What time of year did you go? With two college students at different colleges, the only time both of them are available is in the summer, and I wonder if it’s too hot.

We were there for Spring Break…but I don’t believe the temperatures change too much throughout the year, especially near the ocean. They may get a little more rain during the summer, but the rain there comes and goes pretty quickly! We experienced a couple of heavy downpours that lasted about 10 minutes, and then, it was back to sunshine and blue sky. You should definitely check it out…it is stunning! ❤️

Great blog! thanks for the info and beautiful pictures…had to show it to hubby to convince him this is the resort we must go. Just a question, do they also serve fresh coconut drinks? I know they have them in Cuba, so wondering if they do thesame in PC. Curious 🙂
Hmmm…I don’t remember seeing people drinking out of coconuts, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they have them. It seemed that they had everything…There were fresh coconut slices at the buffet, so perhaps if you request a drink, they will make you one. They do have coconuts for sure! 😊❤️
My husband and I went on a Punta Cana vacation before my twins were born, but I don’t recall the name of the resort. This one looks way nicer than where we stayed, by far!

Wow! I always think of Punta Cana as a singles type of place to visit. It looks so much fun for the family and also for adult alone time. Love the camp and the pools. The views are gorgeous. We usually do cruises but I would love to do a resort vacation with the kids in the future.
Yes…give it a try! This was the amazing thing, that it somehow worked well for everyone…families, newlyweds, elderly couples. There is a section of the resort called Colonial Club that is for adults only, but the rest was for everyone…and it was awesome! 🙂

I am so happy to hear you found this post helpful! Majestic Colonial is a beautiful resort, and I hope you have an amazing time like we did. If you would like to go to Santo Domingo, I would say, by all means do! It is a beautiful city with incredible history. Talk to the people at the resort and take an organized tour. We brought our two daughters with us and it was great. We felt perfectly safe, no issues at all. Just be prepared that there will be people trying to sell you stuff along the way…That’s about it! Did you find the ocean to be too rough? Did you feel safe letting your girls go in the water? Do they have snorkeling at the resort or do you have to do an excursion for that? And do you recommend water shoes to wear on the beach to protect against parasites etc?

Sorry for the delayed response. Our Santo Domingo trip took the entire day. We left in the morning around 7:00 am and came back at sunset. I honestly, do not know if they have snorkeling right at the resort, but I am sure they will inform you where to go. The ocean was rough only one day…other than that, I thought it was beautiful! We did not wear water shoes…we never have…but, if you are worried, by all means get some! 🙂

We specified in our reservation that we would be traveling with two kids, and they had it all set up for us when we got there. We really did not have to request anything! I am sure that if there is any problem, they will take care of you at the front desk! 🙂

Hi. Great article. We are planning our annual April vacation and this year my oldest son is not coming but my 17 yo is and he’s bringing his girlfriend. So, we’re looking for a resort with a lot to keep us busy and a suite style room that can somehow accommodate us 😉 ….. are their tennis or basketball courts ? Beach volleyball ? There are tennis courts, and a multi-purpose basketball court…They also have all kinds of activities around the swimming pool, so you are definitely not going to get bored. It is an absolutely beautiful place, and we would totally love to go back sometime soon! Enjoy your vacation. You will have a blast! How would this resort be for a late middle aged couple traveling without children or grandchildren? Do they have an adults only section?
Hi, Mike! Yesss! They do have an adults only section, and it is called the Colonial Club. The pool there is more narrow, but if you prefer to be away from kids, this is the place to go. I think you would have a great time in the family section, too. The afternoon parties take place in one specific area of the pool, but the rest is quiet and empty…at least in my experience. Now, the good thing about the Colonial Club is that you are likely to get a chair on the beach more easily. Their beach never seemed as crowded as ours. Hope this helps! Enjoy your time! 🙂

My fiance and I are planning on marrying there at that resort. Nothing is booked yet, as we only got engaged two weeks ago, but the Majestic Colonial is definitely where we want to go–and after seeing your post, I’m even more excited about going.
It will be a LARGE group of us (obviously, since it’s a wedding)… .so not sure if there is any additional info.you can give in that regards.
Also, I have three boys travelling with me. Ages 13, 14, and 15. Probably too old for the Splash Kids Club, so I’m wondering what there is there to entertain them (besides the beach). I only ask because at that age there’s only so much of simple ‘sunbathing’ they can take before they get bored of it. Can you suggest anything?

Any ideas surrounding the wedding aspect. Obviously you weren’t there for a wedding yourself, but I wondered if there is anything you observed that would be ideal for people travelling for a wedding? I’m wondering about booking group excursions for our group…
Also… you mentioned leaving your kids at the splash kids club, while you and your hubby went elsewhere. Did you feel 100% safe with that, or did you have any reservations. Again my boys are older, so they probably would prefer strolling around the resort, and I feel abit uneasy about them doing that unsupervised. What are your thoughts.

Awww, thank you so much, Celeste, and BIG CONGRATS on your engagement! 🙂 You will have a fantastic time, no question. In fact, they have done some renovations to the resort since we visited, and it is probably even better now. As far as the boys are concerned, they can definitely spend some time at the larger water slides at the Kids Club. We felt totally safe leaving out daughters there. The staff were very nice and attentive. I would not worry at all! 🙂 There are also a ton of games that the resort staff organizes on the beach…at least this is how it was when we were there. The swimming pool alone is so spectacular that our kids never wanted to leave.
I really don’t know what to advise you as far as the wedding goes. I did see a wedding while we were there. It took place later in the afternoon, and the couple got married in the beautiful gazebo on the beach; the dinner was set up in a designated area also on the beach. It all looked gorgeous!
