Few corners of the world can offer stunning scenery and consistent weather like the Amalfi Italian Coast. Situated along the Sorrentine Peninsula in Italy, this beautiful destination is one of the most popular in Europe. It features an abundance of charming hotels, enchanting towns, scenic cliff walks, and wonderful cuisine.

Most tourists arrive in Naples since it is a rather easy place from which to begin a road trip along the Amalfi Italian Coast. Taking in Capri Island, Pompeii, and quaint towns such as Ravello, the following two-week itinerary will ensure you get the most out of your time on the spectacular Amalfi Italian Coast.

Start your adventure in Naples, one of the most famous cities in all of Italy and beyond. It is a place filled with history, irresistible charm, and delicious food. From hidden churches and cobblestone alleys to busy markets and fascinating museums, your choices in Naples are endless. Whether you decide to stick to eating pizza or get lost in the Piazza del Mercato, your experiences in this colorful city will be unique. You will also find that Naples is the ideal place to stock up on supplies for the road ahead and to unwind before all the excitement that is awaiting.

If you can afford a couple of extra days, stay a little longer! You are not going to regret spending the time and money to explore more of the attractions Naples has to offer.

Notable Points of Interest in Naples

  • Museo Cappella Sansevero – a fascinating funerary museum with renowned sculptures
  • Galleria Borbonica and the underground world of Naples – a network of tunnels and spaces under the city with fascinating history
  • Via Francesco Caracciolo e Lungomare di Napoli – a stunning walk along the Gulf of Naples, lined with restaurants, shopping, and beautiful panoramas
  • Via San Gregorio Armeno – a charming, although crowded street where you can enjoy shopping for a variety of Italian arts and crafts
  • Posillipo – a beautiful area of Naples which offers some of the best views of the city, the Gulf of Naples, and Mt. Vesuvius

Whether you explore churches and museums or decide to see an opera at Teatro di San Carlo, there are more attractions to discover at every turn. However, this is also quite a relaxing city where an afternoon stroll beneath colorful facades is just as unique, and entirely free.  At the same time, the market in Piazza del Mercato is the perfect place to take in the local customs.

Where to Stay in Naples

While there is no shortage of accommodations in a city like Naples, you may want to take some time to research various options in order to find the type of place that suits you best. Location is always one of the most important factors to consider when trying to decide where to stay. You can start your search by taking a look at the HIGHEST-RATED ACCOMMODATIONS IN NAPLES on Booking.com. (We have filtered out all the lower-rated ones for you.) This is an excellent website not only because it gives you plenty of options to choose from, but also it allows you to cancel and make changes to your reservations fairly close to the date of your stay.

Day 3 – Pompeii & Sorrento

Having departed the big city, Pompeii is just a short drive from Naples and a spectacular sight at the foot of Mount Vesuvius. An ancient Roman city that was devastated by volcanic eruptions, Pompeii is arguably the most popular landmark in the region. It offers a breathtaking walking tour that is sure to leave you speechless. From old temples, houses and even the remains of humans, there is a certain aura in this town. Pompeii can truly make you feel alive in spite of the death visible at every turn.

Later in the day, you will take a short drive to the town of Sorrento. The spectacular coastal drive until this point is the perfect introduction to the region. You will be winding past luscious hillsides on one side, and the ocean on the other! It is no surprise that most visitors find the journey along the Amalfi Italian Coast just as impressive as the destinations themselves.

Where to Stay in Sorrento

Just like Naples, Sorrento offers various accommodations for different tastes and budgets. An excellent place to start your search is Booking.com, where you can see the TOP-RATED PLACES TO STAY IN SORRENTO. (Once again, we have only included the best-reviewed places in town.)

Day 4  – Capri Island (From Sorrento)

After being on the move for a few days, there is always the option to take a day of leisure in Sorrento. It is a beautiful town, and a perfect place to rest the body and mind. However, you absolutely should consider taking a trip to Capri Island which is a very convenient day trip from Sorrento. Featuring unrivaled views of the coastline, the Island of Capri never fails to amaze incoming tourists who make the effort. Here, you will get a chance to encounter a rather unspoiled part of the Amalfi Italian Coast.

Arriving in Marina Piccola, you should have more than four hours to explore the island, which is overflowing with natural beauty, including many remote beaches. Again, this is merely a day tour option from Sorrento, so you will also have an evening of relaxation when you return back to town. Without question, it is a win win situation for anyone visiting the area!

Day 5 & 6 – Positano

While Sorrento is undoubtedly beautiful, Positano is probably the most striking town along the Amalfi Italian Coast. Once more, you can expect a truly memorable drive between these two destinations. However, the town itself is always the highlight. Featuring a seemingly endless line of steps down into the center, Positano is graced with stunning panoramic views. It also offers an array of divine restaurants, comfortable hotels and a quiet waterfront. In fact, this is one of the best places on the Sorrentine Penisnula to capture the sunset, which makes an overnight stay an absolute must.

What to Do in Positano

  • Path of the Gods – Travelling between Positano and Nocelle, the impressive views make this hiking trail worth the effort.
  • Fornillo – This beach is considered by many the best in town, as well as one of the best in the whole Mediterranean region.
  • Santa Maria Church – Renowned as the “Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta,” this Catholic Church is free to visit. It offers a quiet escape from the tourist crowds.
  • Sample the local cuisine – An incredible lineup of restaurants can be found in Positano including Chez Black and Rada. Either way, you will find an authentic taste of Italy everywhere you go in town.

Where to Stay in Positano

Positano is such a picturesque town on the Amalfi Italian Coast that there is really no bad location here. Still, when choosing your accommodations, it’s always wise to see what others have to say about their personal experience. Therefore, start by checking out the BEST-REVIEWED PLACES IN POSITANO on Booking.com, then make your selection. (As with all other links in this article, we have included only the places that people like the most.)

Day 7, 8 & 9 – Amalfi Town & Ravello

Amalfi Town is probably the busiest of all the stopovers along this iconic stretch. You will find that it is a little different from the other towns. Featuring a bustling center, you can experience more of a festival atmosphere here, as opposed to the largely quiet surroundings elsewhere.

After spending a night in Amalfi Town, Ravello is an excellent place to stay for another two nights. There, you can continue to soak in the unique atmosphere of the Amalfi Italian Coast.

The town of Ravello sits high up on the cliff side a little further on from Amalfi, and offers even more variety. Famous for the annual music festival, Ravello is a quiet place with spectacular views and many ancient remnants.  Arguably, the best of these views can be found in Villa Ruffolo at the top of the town. Meanwhile, the colorful facades, quaint coffee shops and unassuming eateries make every walk around Ravello an adventure. In terms of landmarks, Ravello Duomo is possibly the most iconic you will find along the coast. This ancient cathedral dates back as far as 1086, which certainly adds to the mystique.

Once again, we recommend that you start your search for great accommodations on Booking.com. Keep in mind that you can book the places you like, but you don’t have to pay right away for most properties. Booking.com gives you the freedom to change and even cancel your reservations at a later date without charging you.

Day 10 & 11– Furore

Lastly, you should make time for Furore as this small fishing village never fails to impress tourists. In many ways, this particular town can feel like stepping back in time. The Roman remnants are visible throughout, such as the ancient architecture and murals on the walls. Again, this would make a great place to unwind and soak in the atmosphere for a couple of days. Should you wish to venture out of town, the nearby Fjord of Furore is a stunning part of the mountains to explore.

Where to Stay in Furore

As with all the other locations on this itinerary, you can find great accommodation options in Furore on Booking.com. Take a look at the TOP-RATED PLACES IN FURORE, and book your stay. In general, the accommodations that are well-liked by visitors tend to sell out far in advance, so don’t wait until it’s too late! If you change your mind later, you can always cancel and reserve something else, just be sure to make those changes by the date that Booking.com gives you.

Day 13 & 14 – Back to Naples

While your departure point may differ, leaving an extra day at the end of your Amalfi Italian Coast adventure is always a good idea. Nobody likes to rush on vacation, especially in such a beautiful and relaxing part of the world. You could return back to Naples and spend another day there. You could also opt to stay an extra night in any of the above mentioned towns en route to Naples. Featuring a wide variety of restaurants, hotels, and entertainment, your time will be well spent regardless of what you choose.

Either way, a road trip along the Sorrentine Peninsula is an unforgettable experience! It’s a great way to gain insight into one of the most stunning and unforgettable destinations on the planet!

Great photos and guide! I spent 4-5 days in Postiano a few years ago and haven’t been many places that are more beautiful. Next time I’m back in the country I’ll have to explore more of the coast

Hi! I want to ask about your itinerary…How did you travel between cities on the Amalfi Italian coast? By car?

Vessy 02/01/2020 -

Yes! At the top of the article you can see a Google map of the exact route along the Amalfi Italian coast, which you can follow from town to town. It’s a road with a lot of twists and turns, but absolutely worth it! Just take it slow if you’ve never driven there before!
